My Story
When I was in school, I always proclaimed that I would never wear a suit to work. Somehow, I ended up wearing a white Clinique coat and working behind a cosmetics counter. The job market was horrible when I graduated from college. A lot of my friends just went to grad school to avoid getting a job. That wasn’t for me.
A few years and odd jobs later, I thought I found my dream job! I landed a job as a pharmaceutical rep. I remember my first call. There I was in Weirton, WV on the snowiest and coldest day of the year with my briefcase in hand walking to the office. Oh, not only was I wearing a suit, we weren’t allowed to wear pants at that time. The wind chill was below zero degrees fahrenheit, and I had to sport a skirt to work. Sheesh! I should be grateful right? It was a JOB!
But, I was not happy. I would feel ill every Sunday as I thought about my call plan for the week. This was about the time of the dotcom and technology boom. So I traded in my suit wearing pharmaceutical days for a new gig. I worked at a very cool high tech company for almost a year. The culture and people were absolutely fantastic. Well, now however, I was sitting in a cubicle all day, and we know what happened to that boom. I felt like a was just trudging along make decent money but really not happy. There was no freedom with what I was doing or feeling.
Fortunately some of my old pharmaceutical pals told me about a great work at home job. This was my ticket to be my own boss and work at home. Yippee! We arranged speaker programs for a pharmaceutical company. It was fun. BUT, if I did not work… I did not get paid. This was when my entrepreneurial spirit began to further bloom! I fell in love with the home party business and network marketing. Heck, I had a JOB. So I could build my home party biz on the side. Eventually, I will have enough residual income and be my own home boss. Well, if you don’t have parties or your team doesn’t, then there’s no income. Sometimes at the parties, I would just break even or even be in the red when it was all said and done.
So, an MLM and made sense YES! Like other network marketers, I have tried a few. I did everything by the book. I made my list and churned through it. I shared my product so much that I would run out of samples! Things got really sad when I found myself calling a cousin that I hadn’t spoken to in years to pitch my opportunity. That’s not the lowest though. We would meet people on vacation and really bond. Then, when I got home, I would contact them and pitch my opportunity to them! When your pockets continue to empty, you start to do some crazy stuff.
You can only bug family and friends so much before they think you are nuts. I just knew in my heart there had to be other people just like me that saw the freedom network marketing and direct selling offers. Turns out, I was right. There are hundreds of THOUSANDS of people just like me. And you know what? They are not just on my continent. People just like me are found around the globe.
And, that folks…..is why I turned to internet marketing.
What about the suit? No, I don’t HAVE to wear one ever again:)
